Volvo Trucks Series 2 1929 history

Assar Gabrielsson and Gustaf Larson, who worked as engineers in the Swedish company SKF, dreamed of building a car adapted to the Scandinavian climate: Volvo was born in 1924. The name Volvo, which I roll syphilitic, in Latin, alludes to the bearings in action. The first truck left the company in 1928. A year earlier, was released the first car. It was a real challenge because Gabrielsson and Larson wanted to build a complete car from the chassis to the engine.

The company had plans to make caper (OV) and sedans (PV4), but despite the many improvements in their vehicles, did not get many benefits due to low demand. Some were modified as a light truck chassis, and the first ten prototype cars were sold as flatbed trucks cutting off the back wall. Some customers purchased the old OV or PV4 and turned them into trucks.

The first Volvo truck had a capacity of 1.5 tons, but could carry up to twice the weight, despite its modest 28 hp engine and 4 cylinders. Was available 2 wheelbases and 2 ratios.

The truck was a success: in 1929 he sold 497 units. Volvo had planned to sell in two years, but at six months and was exhausted. The gearbox and shaft drive were highly resistant, like the steel frame. Most trucks are sold as a chassis with cab, but Volvo could install a closed cabin made by an independent, Atvidaberg.

At that time, the other imported trucks were not designed for low temperatures in Sweden and could not cope with the climate. Volvo did not expect such a success and had to launch a new series to meet demand.

Series 2 had the same engine underpowered, but the gear ratio was reduced by one to improve reliability. The speed limit was lower, but the truck was more resistant when carrying cargo. The main difference between the Series 1 and 2 was the gauge. Series 1 retain the dimension between car wheels (1.30 mm), which was a problem when driving on the roads (mostly dirt trucks).

The truck had little stability and could no longer wheelbase and horse carts, wider. So the wheelbase was extended to 1.46 mm by placing the rear springs out of the frame. Like the 1 Series, Truck Series 2 was simple, rugged and reliable.
